Report Child Abuse

Tennessee Law & Reporting Abuse

Under Tennessee law, all individuals are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect. This includes, but is not limited to, doctors, teachers, law enforcement, mental health professionals, childcare providers, parents, family members, and community members.

If you have reasonable cause to believe that a child is being abused or neglected, you are required by law to report your concerns immediately to the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services (DCS) or law enforcement. Failure to report suspected abuse or neglect is considered a misdemeanor.

It is important that you do not attempt to conduct your own investigation. Instead, report your concerns to the appropriate authorities, as it is the role of DCS and law enforcement to assess and investigate reports. Not all reports will meet the criteria for investigation; however, if additional concerns arise after a report has been made, you should report again.

Mandated reporters are protected under Tennessee law. Individuals who report in good faith are granted immunity from civil and criminal liability. All reports are confidential.
